The 1,906-acre oceanfront resort to be located on Cat Island in The Bahamas is scheduled to open May 2012.
The Out Islands of the Bahamas— the term refers to everything except the Commonwealth's two most urbanized islands, New Providence and Grand Bahama— are also called the "the Real Bahamas" because of their laid-back feel. The largest upcoming development is PGA Village, a $200 million golf community opening next year on Cat Island that has a mix of residential offerings and is a sister property to the PGA's headquarter community in Florida (pgavillage.com).
Golf Stars like Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman have been involved in resort and residential prohects for years by designing courses. But when it comes to the sport's biggest names, it is hard to outdo the Professional Golfers Association, which owns and operatesn the well-known PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
They say it never rains on a golf course, but the big, black cumulonimbus that's been hovering over the global economy hasn't spared the game of golf. Rounds are down, equipment companies are practically giving products away, and private clubs are so desperate for new members that they've taken to courting them on AM radio...

The PGA of America and the partners of Cat Island Partners broke ground for the first-ever PGA Village to be developed outside of the United States. The official groundbreaking took place on Cat Island in The Bahamas and was attended by a large delegation of government officials including the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham, Hon. Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, Minister of Tourism and Aviation along with an audience of over 400 local residents and supporters.
What recession? At least not as far as the PGA of America is concerned. In fact, the timing couldn't be more right, officials say, to start construction on another PGA Village, except this one will be outside the country...
Cat Island is currently one of the most undeveloped islands in the Bahamas but it will soon be on the radar of overseas property investors looking for opportunities in the area...
